Standard aluminum metal clad (MC) armor cannot be buried without a PVC outer jacket due to galvanic corrosion and soil degradation. While interlocking aluminum armor provides physical defense against rocks and shovels, bare aluminum deteriorates rapidly when in direct contact with wet soil, acidic ground chemistry, or raw concrete. The extruded, sunlight-resistant PVC jacket forms an impermeable waterproof seal that isolates the metal armor, ensuring long-term underground performance.
Under National Electrical Code (NEC Table 310.16) guidelines, 2 AWG 4-conductor aluminum cable carries up to 90 Amps at standard 75°C terminal ratings (and 100 Amps at 90°C). This makes it an ideal size for feeding 90A three-phase commercial subpanels or dedicated industrial equipment requiring a full neutral.
While a 4-conductor 2 AWG cable is thick, this assembly uses compact stranded aluminum alloy encased in a flexible interlocking metal spiral under the PVC jacket. It is designed to snake through structural framing and trenches much easier than rigid metal pipe. However, you must respect its minimum bend radius of 9.38 inches (calculated as 7x the 1.34-inch diameter over jacket per NEC standards). You should loop it in smooth, sweeping curves rather than forcing a sharp 90-degree bend, which could bind the internal armor or crimp the conductors.
2 AWG 4C Direct Burial Aluminum MC Cable has an approximate physical net weight of 671 lbs per 1,000 feet (0.671 lbs/ft). The nominal outside diameter over the protective black PVC outer jacket is 1.34 inches (+/- 5%). Knowing these physical dimensions allows installers to select the correct liquid-tight direct-burial connector fittings, evaluate trench width, and calculate spool handling on the jobsite.
Wire America supplies an extensive inventory of Direct Burial Aluminum MC cable cut by the foot or on master reels. Most cut-to-length orders are processed and shipped within 24 to 48 hours, delivering directly to your shop or jobsite within 2 to 4 business days once in transit.
We ship orders from the regional distribution hub closest to your jobsite to keep transit times and freight costs as low as possible. Expedited shipping options are also available at checkout.

As a general rule for a three-phase subpanel or disconnect box installation, you will want to strip back roughly 8 to 12 inches of the outer PVC jacket and aluminum armor. This gives you enough length to cleanly route the four individual insulated hot/neutral conductors and bare ground wire to their respective terminal blocks without forcing tight pulls or putting tension on the lugs.
