URD stands for Underground Residential Distribution. It is a category of electrical cable specifically engineered for direct burial in the earth. Unlike standard indoor wire, URD is built with rugged XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation that is chemically designed to resist moisture, soil acids, and mechanical pressure without needing a protective outer jacket or conduit.
Note: These ratings are based on 90°C conductor temperature. Always consult NEC Table 310.15 for specific installation derating.
In three-phase power systems (residential or commercial), the neutral wire usually only carries the "unbalanced" portion of the electrical load. Because this load is typically much smaller than the main phase load, the code allows for a smaller neutral conductor (#1 AWG for Syracuse and #2 AWG for Notre Dame). This reduces the cable’s weight and cost while remaining fully code-compliant.
Yes. These cables are designed for Direct Burial. The high-density XLP insulation acts as its own protection against the elements. While you can install it in a conduit for added mechanical protection (such as under a driveway), it is typically fully rated to be placed directly in a 24-inch deep trench.
Check Local Codes: Local municipal codes may require a deeper trench (e.g., 30 inches) or conduit in certain scenarios.
Yes. Even though it is an underground wire, the ends of the cable often sit above ground where they connect to a meter box or transformer. The insulation is UV-rated to ensure it won’t crack or become brittle when exposed to the sun at these termination points.
Only for the first few feet. Because URD is optimized for burial rather than fire resistance, the NEC generally limits its use to no more than 3-5 feet inside a structure. Typically, once you are 5 feet past the point of entry, you must transition to an indoor-rated cable like Aluminum SER.
IMPORTANT: Always consult with a certified local electrician who is up to date on all local code before selecting a size and type of cable.
