Built for high-capacity electrical distribution, this Priority-Plex® twisted feeder cable is the ideal solution for large-scale commercial and residential projects requiring reliable 175-Amp service. By factory-twisting two phase conductors and a dedicated neutral into a single assembly, this 3/0 AWG cable eliminates the logistical complexity of handling separate reels, significantly reducing setup time and labor costs during the pull.

Why Choose 3/0-3C Twisted XHHW-2 Aluminum Feeder?

This 3-conductor assembly (Black, Red, and White) is designed for professionals who prioritize efficiency without compromising on safety. The Priority-Plex® configuration ensures the conductors remain in a tight, consistent twist, which minimizes surface contact with conduit walls and allows for a much smoother pulling experience compared to loose conductors.

  • Priority-Plex® Design: Eliminates the need for manual on-site twisting or paralleling, preventing conductor crossovers and ensuring a balanced pull.

  • Streamlined Phase Identification: Features color-coded Black and Red phase conductors and a dedicated White neutral for fast, accurate termination at the panel.

  • High-Performance XHHW-2 Insulation: The rugged cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation is engineered to withstand high temperatures and moisture-heavy environments.

  • Efficient AA-8000 Aluminum: Provides the necessary ampacity for heavy electrical loads while offering a lightweight profile that is easier to maneuver than copper.

This 3/0 AWG (pronounced "three-aught"), 3-conductor assembly is a heavy-duty feeder cable designed for high-amperage power distribution. It is a staple in residential and commercial electrical systems, most frequently used for 200A residential service entrances and main sub-panel feeds in commercial buildings. The XHHW-2 rating makes it exceptionally versatile, allowing for installation in conduit in both wet and dry locations, including underground service laterals.

Priority-Plex® is a specialized manufacturing process where the conductors are pre-twisted (cabled) together at the factory.

  • Labor Efficiency: By combining the three conductors into a single twisted bundle on one reel, the installer eliminates the need to set up multiple reels and manually parallel the wires during the pull.
  • Tangle-Free Pulling: The helical twist prevents "birdcaging" or the wires crossing over each other, a common cause of jams in conduit bends.
  • Reduced Friction: The twisted geometry reduces the total surface area in contact with the conduit wall, which significantly lowers the pulling tension required compared to pulling three separate parallel wires.

At the 3/0 gauge, aluminum offers an optimal balance of high ampacity and cost-effectiveness. Using copper for a 200A run would be significantly heavier and more expensive.

  • XLPE Insulation: The conductors use Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). Unlike standard PVC (THHN), XLPE is a thermoset material that does not melt or drip under high heat or short-circuit conditions.
  • Wet/Dry Performance: It maintains a full 90°C rating even in wet environments. This is a vital upgrade over older cables that were limited to 75°C when moisture was present.
  • 8000 Series Alloy: This cable uses modern aluminum alloy, which is more ductile and stable at termination points than older utility-grade aluminum.

According to NEC Table 310.16, the ampacity for 3/0 Aluminum depends on the temperature rating of the equipment terminations:

  • 60°C Terminations: 130 Amps
  • 75°C Terminations: 155 Amps
  • 90°C Terminations: 175 Amps

⚠️ PRO TIP: Most modern main breakers and distribution panels are rated for 75°C. Therefore, in most commercial applications, this cable is treated as a 155 Amp feeder. However, for residential service entrance applications (120/240V, single-phase), NEC 310.12 allows this gauge to be used for 200A services under the "83% rule," provided it carries the entire load of the dwelling.

This assembly follows the standard 120/240V or 120/208V color code for easy identification:

  1. Black: Phase A (Hot)
  2. Red: Phase B (Hot)
  3. White: Neutral

The colors are typically embedded in the XLPE insulation or clearly striped, ensuring permanent identification that won't rub off during a difficult pull through a long conduit run.

Yes we offer XHHW-2 Aluminum Wire in a single conductor from 14 AWG to 1000 MCM in multiple colors by the foot. Shop our single conductor XHHW-2 Collection here.
