This 3/0 AWG, 3-conductor cable is specifically color-coded for 480V 3-phase industrial power distribution. The Brown, Orange, and Yellow phase identification is the industry standard for high-voltage commercial and industrial systems (typically 277/480V). It is commonly utilized as a feeder for mid-to-large scale industrial motors, commercial HVAC systems, and distribution panels where three phases are required without a neutral in the conduit run.
Managing three separate 3/0 conductors in an industrial environment can lead to "jamming" or "birdcaging" within the conduit. Priority-Plex® factory-twists these three phases into a single, synchronized helical bundle. This structural design ensures the conductors move as a single unit, significantly reducing pulling friction and preventing the wires from wedging against each other in 90-degree elbows. This reduces the physical labor required and speeds up installation times on high-voltage projects.
In high-voltage industrial applications, thermal stability and chemical resistance are critical for long-term safety. XHHW-2 insulation is made of Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), a thermoset material that offers superior heat resistance compared to standard PVC-based THHN. It will not melt or deform under emergency overload conditions or in high-ambient-temperature environments like mechanical rooms. Furthermore, XLPE provides excellent protection against moisture and industrial oils, ensuring the 480V power backbone remains stable.
The allowable ampacity for 3/0 Aluminum is determined by the temperature rating of the equipment terminations per NEC Table 310.16. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 155 Amps, and for 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 175 Amps. Because all three conductors in this Priority-Plex® bundle (Brown, Orange, and Yellow) are current-carrying phases, standard NEC adjustment factors must be applied if the cable is installed in a raceway with other circuits to prevent overheating.
Proper infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the diameter and stiffness of 3/0 AWG wire. To comply with the NEC 40% fill requirement, a 2-inch conduit is generally the minimum recommended for a 3-conductor 3/0 AWG twisted pull. Always use UL-listed AL9CU mechanical or compression lugs. It is a best practice to wire-brush the 8000-series aluminum alloy and apply an antioxidant joint compound before torquing the connection to the manufacturer’s specified tension to ensure a lifetime of low-resistance performance.
