Engineered for high conductivity, flexibility, and maximum corrosion resistance, 1 AWG 7-Stranded Tinned Bare Copper Wire is the professional choice for heavy-duty electrical grounding, marine power networks, and utility distribution.

This uninsulated soft-drawn copper features a hot-dipped or electroplated tin coating that blocks rust, moisture, and salt-air oxidation. Its 7-strand concentric layout provides superior flexibility for easier bending and pulling compared to stiff solid conductors.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Tin-Coated Corrosion Defense: Soft-drawn copper hot-dipped or electroplated with tin to stop oxidation, tarnish, and moisture-induced corrosion in harsh environments.

  • 7-Stranded Flexibility: Concentric-lay 7-strand construction makes it easy to bend, route, and terminate compared to stiff solid conductors.

  • High-Conductivity Grounding: Delivers 265 Amps allowable ampacity (at 75°C conductor temp / 25°C ambient) with an ultra-low DC resistance of 0.12520 Ohms per 1,000 ft at 20°C.

  • Soft-Drawn Annealed Copper: Flexible, easy to work with, and less prone to work-hardening or cracking during installation.

  • ASTM & Federal Compliant: Fully meets ASTM B-3, ASTM B-8, ASTM B-33, ASTM B-258, and Federal Spec QQ-W-343 standards.

This heavy-duty tinned copper wire is widely used across several demanding industries and electrical applications:

  • Marine & Boating: Large DC battery banks, high-capacity inverter leads, main vessel ground buses, and bow thruster feeds exposed to harsh salt spray and bilge moisture.
  • Solar & Off-Grid Systems: Heavy-duty battery interconnects, commercial solar array grounding rings, and high-amp charge controller runs.
  • Grounding & Bonding: Heavy commercial main service grounding electrode conductors (GEC), substation grounding grids, cathodic protection, and structural lightning protection systems.
  • Industrial & Automotive: Custom battery jumper runs, main engine ground straps, and heavy equipment grounding in damp or chemical-heavy environments.

The difference comes down to flexibility and tensile strength, determined by a heat-treatment process called annealing:

  • Soft Drawn (Annealed) Copper: Heat-treated after being drawn through dies to soften the metal. It is highly flexible, easy to bend by hand, and simple to route through conduit or connect to grounding lugs. This is the standard temper for grounding, bonding, and building electrical systems.
  • Hard Drawn Copper: Retains the mechanical stiffness and hardness gained during drawing. It has much higher tensile strength and resists stretching or sagging, making it ideal for long-span overhead distribution lines where structural rigidity is required.

Tinning places a protective metal coating over the bare copper strands. In moist, humid, or marine environments, untreated bare copper oxidizes and forms a green crust (copper oxide), which increases resistance and degrades connections over time. The tin layer prevents oxidation, ensuring long-term conductivity and significantly extending wire life.

While both conduct electricity efficiently, 7-stranded 1 AWG wire is considerably more flexible. It bends easily around corners, withstands engine/machinery vibration without metal fatigue, and is much simpler to pull through conduit or tie into grounding buses.

Is this 1 AWG tinned copper wire insulated?

No, this is an uninsulated bare conductor. It is designed specifically for grounding, bonding, and direct electrical connection paths where insulating jackets are not required or intended.

This wire weighs approximately 258.4 lbs per 1,000 feet and features a rated breaking strength of 2,552 lbs, making it exceptional for heavy overhead runs, commercial ground grids, and structural grounding where high mechanical tension is present.

Yes! One of the major added benefits of tinned copper is solderability. Because tin is the primary component of solder, the pre-tinned surface allows solder to flow and adhere almost instantly without having to scrape away copper oxidation.
