While many contractors prefer to parallel two sets of 350 MCM to achieve high ampacity, 750 MCM Aluminum is the superior choice when conduit space is limited. A single run of 750 MCM can carry significantly more power than a single smaller run, making it the standard for 500A–600A individual feeders. It is the go-to specification for main transformer-to-switchgear connections where high current density is required in a single trench or overhead tray.
A 1,000-foot reel of 750 MCM 3-conductor cable weighs over 2,300 lbs. Managing that much mass during a pull is dangerous if the wires are loose. The Priority-Plex® factory twist binds the three conductors into a single, structurally sound unit. This prevents the "crossover" effect where one heavy conductor slides over another in a bend, which can lead to a crushed jacket or a total blockage. The twist ensures the pulling tension is distributed evenly across the entire aluminum core.
Because 750 MCM is exceptionally thick, it cannot be bent sharply without damaging the internal strands or the XLPE insulation. According to the NEC, the minimum bending radius is typically 8 to 10 times the overall diameter of the cable. For a twisted 3-conductor 750 MCM bundle, this means your pull boxes and conduit elbows must be significantly larger than standard sizes. Using Priority-Plex® helps slightly with flexibility, but proper planning of "sweep" elbows is critical at this gauge.
In high-amperage applications, the skin effect and heat generation are substantial. XHHW-2 uses Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), which is a "thermoset" material. Unlike the "thermoplastic" PVC used in THHN, XLPE does not soften when heated. This is vital for 750 MCM because it ensures the insulation maintains its full thickness and protective properties even when the cable is running at its maximum 90°C thermal limit in a crowded industrial cable tray.
A 3-conductor 750 MCM twisted bundle has a diameter of roughly 2.4 inches. To stay within the 40% fill limit and ensure a successful pull:
