This 350 MCM, 3-conductor assembly is purpose-built for 480V industrial power distribution. The specific Brown, Orange, and Yellow color coding is the industry standard for identifying the three phases of a high-voltage system (277/480V). It is typically used to feed large industrial motors, commercial HVAC chillers, and heavy machinery where high-amperage, three-phase power is required without a neutral in the bundle.
Pulling 350 MCM wire in an industrial setting often involves complex conduit runs through factories and mechanical rooms. Priority-Plex® factory-twists the phases into a tight, helical bundle, providing two major advantages. First, the Anti-Phase Separation ensures that the phases stay together throughout the entire pull, simplifying identification at junction boxes and switchgear. Second, the Magnetic Field Cancellation provided by the helical arrangement helps minimize the electromagnetic field (EMF) generated by the cable, which can reduce interference with nearby sensitive control wiring or communication lines.
In high-voltage industrial applications, insulation failure is not an option. XHHW-2 features Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which offers superior performance over standard PVC. It is a thermoset material that will not melt or deform if the motor experiences an overcurrent or if the conduit is located in a high-heat area. Additionally, XLPE provides exceptional Moisture and Chemical Protection, making it ideal for the demanding environments found in processing plants and refineries. It is significantly tougher and more abrasion-resistant than THHN, which is critical when pulling through long runs of rigid metal conduit.
According to NEC Table 310.16, the ampacity for 350 MCM Aluminum is determined by your termination temperature ratings. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 250 Amps, and for 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 280 Amps. Note that because all three conductors in this bundle (Brown, Orange, Yellow) are current-carrying phases, you must follow NEC 310.15(C)(1) adjustment factors if you plan to run multiple 3-phase circuits in the same conduit or cable tray to avoid overheating.
Handling 350 MCM requires proper planning for both space and mechanical force. To comply with the 40% fill rule, a 3-inch conduit is generally the minimum recommended for a 3-conductor 350 MCM twisted pull. The 8000-series aluminum alloy used in this cable is designed for maximum ductility, allowing it to be trained into tight switchgear cabinets more easily than older, stiffer aluminum wire. Always ensure that all lugs are rated for AL9CU and that a calibrated torque wrench is used to reach the manufacturer’s specified tension, preventing hot spots at the connection points.
Yes we offer XHHW-2 Aluminum Wire in a single conductor from 14 AWG to 1000 MCM in multiple colors by the foot.
