350 MCM Aluminum is typically specified for 300-amp to 350-amp circuits. While smaller gauges are sufficient for standard residential services, 350 MCM is the workhorse for industrial motor control centers, large commercial HVAC chillers, and high-density apartment sub-panels. It is also the preferred "upsize" for 200A or 250A runs that span long distances (over 250 feet) to counteract the voltage drop that would occur with smaller conductors.
Large-gauge conductors like 350 MCM have significant "memory"—they tend to resist bending and try to spring back to their original shape, which can make managing cable in large junction boxes a nightmare. The Priority-Plex® factory twist helps neutralize this internal tension. Because the conductors are already cabled in a helical formation, the bundle stays together more naturally, making it easier to train into lugs and preventing the "sprawl" that occurs with parallel-laid heavy wires.
At the 300A+ power level, heat dissipation is a major concern. Standard PVC-based wires (like THHN) can become soft or brittle over decades of thermal cycling. This cable uses XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation, which is a thermoset material. It maintains its structural integrity and dielectric strength even during emergency overloads or high-ambient-temperature conditions, ensuring that your critical industrial power feeds remain stable and safe for the long term.
Since this 3-conductor assembly includes two hots (Black/Red) and a neutral (White), a separate equipment grounding conductor (EGC) is almost always required. According to NEC Table 250.122:
While NEC calculations might suggest a 2.5-inch conduit is sufficient for 40% fill, 350 MCM is a very "thick" pull. For a 3-conductor twisted bundle of this size, most professional installers recommend 3-inch or 3.5-inch conduit. This extra space is vital for navigating multiple 90-degree bends and allows the pull to be completed using standard mechanical tuggers without exceeding the cable's maximum sideways pressure limit.
