This 14 AWG, 3-conductor cable is the most common gauge for standard residential lighting and general-purpose 15-amp branch circuits. The "3-conductor" configuration—consisting of Black, Red, and White insulated wires plus a bare ground—is the specific requirement for 3-way and 4-way switch loops. It allows a single light fixture to be controlled from two or more locations, such as the top and bottom of a staircase or either end of a hallway.
While standard 14 AWG wire typically features a white jacket, the Blue Jacket is a specialty color-coding used for rapid identification of specific circuits.
The inclusion of a third insulated conductor (the Red wire) provides 14/3 NM-B with several functional advantages over standard 14/2:
Per NEC Article 334.80, all NM-B cables are restricted to the 60°C temperature column for ampacity calculations. For 14 AWG copper, this fixes the maximum allowable limit at 15 Amps. Even though the internal conductors feature 90°C rated insulation, the assembly is capped at 15A to ensure safety when the cable is installed in thermal insulation or bundled with other wires, preventing the outer jacket from overheating and becoming brittle.
14 AWG copper is the most flexible of the building wires, but it still requires proper installation to meet safety codes:
