This 4/0 AWG, 3-conductor cable is specifically color-coded for 480V 3-phase industrial power distribution. The Brown, Orange, and Yellow phase identification is the industry standard for high-voltage commercial and industrial systems (typically 277/480V). It is most frequently used as a main feeder for industrial motor control centers, large commercial HVAC units, and secondary distribution panels in facilities where a neutral is not required within the conductor bundle.
Managing three separate 4/0 conductors through industrial conduit can be labor-intensive and prone to "jamming" in the bends. Priority-Plex® factory-twists the three phases into a single, synchronized helical bundle. This structural arrangement ensures that the conductors move as one unit, preventing them from spreading out and wedging against the conduit walls. This significantly reduces pulling friction and eliminates the need for installers to manually parallel the wires on-site, saving substantial time and labor costs.
In high-amperage 480V systems, thermal performance and durability are critical safety factors. XHHW-2 insulation is composed of Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), a thermoset material that offers superior heat resistance compared to standard PVC. It will not melt or deform if the circuit experiences an overload or is exposed to high ambient temperatures. Furthermore, XLPE provides excellent resistance to the chemicals, oils, and moisture often found in industrial processing plants, ensuring long-term reliability for your power backbone.
The allowable ampacity for 4/0 Aluminum is determined by the temperature rating of your equipment terminations per NEC Table 310.16. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 180 Amps, and for 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 205 Amps. Because all three conductors in this Priority-Plex® bundle are current-carrying phases, standard NEC adjustment factors must be applied if you are running multiple 3-phase circuits in the same raceway to prevent excessive heat buildup.
Proper infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the diameter and stiffness of 4/0 AWG wire. To satisfy the NEC 40% fill requirement, a 2-inch or 2.5-inch conduit is generally required. Professional installers typically recommend a 2.5-inch pipe for long runs with multiple bends to allow the twisted bundle to pass through easily. Always use UL-listed AL9CU lugs and ensure that you wire-brush the 8000-series aluminum alloy and apply an antioxidant joint compound before torquing the connection to the manufacturer’s specified tension.
