Engineered for maximum power delivery and streamlined installation, this Priority-Plex® twisted feeder cable is the ultimate solution for 200-Amp service applications. By pre-twisting two 4/0 AWG phase conductors and a dedicated neutral into a single, cohesive assembly, it eliminates the logistical challenges of managing multiple heavy reels and manual wire paralleling, resulting in superior job site efficiency.

Why Choose 4/0-3C Twisted XHHW-2 Aluminum Feeder?

This 3-conductor assembly (Black, Red, and White) is specifically designed for the high-demand requirements of modern electrical infrastructure. The Priority-Plex® configuration ensures the conductors remain securely bundled throughout the pull, providing a balanced distribution of tension and reducing the risk of insulation damage in high-stress conduit runs.

  • Priority-Plex® Design: The factory-twisted architecture allows for a single-reel setup, significantly reducing the labor force required for heavy-gauge pulls.

  • Instant Phase Recognition: Features high-visibility Black and Red phase conductors with a dedicated White neutral for rapid, code-compliant termination in any panelboard.

  • Industrial-Grade XHHW-2 Insulation: The cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) jacket is optimized for maximum heat dissipation, chemical resistance, and moisture protection.

  • High-Ampacity AA-8000 Aluminum: Provides the necessary 200-Amp capacity for main services while remaining much lighter and more flexible than equivalent copper conductors.

This 4/0 AWG (pronounced "four-aught"), 3-conductor assembly is a heavy-capacity feeder cable commonly used for 200A to 225A residential and commercial services. It is the industry standard for main service laterals, underground feeders to sub-panels, and large HVAC equipment loads. The XHHW-2 rating allows for installation in conduit in both wet and dry locations, making it exceptionally reliable for burial in outdoor environments.

Priority-Plex® is a specialized manufacturing process where the three conductors are pre-twisted (cabled) together at the factory.

  • Labor Savings: Instead of setting up three separate heavy reels, you pull from a single reel. This can reduce installation time by up to 50%.
  • Anti-Tangle Geometry: The helical twist prevents the conductors from "birdcaging" or crossing over each other, which is the leading cause of cable jams in conduit elbows.
  • Ease of Pulling: The twisted design reduces the surface area contact with the interior of the conduit, significantly lowering pulling friction compared to three parallel wires.

At this size, aluminum is the most cost-effective choice for heavy power distribution. Copper at 4/0 gauge is extremely heavy and significantly more expensive.

  • XLPE Insulation: The conductors are insulated with Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). Unlike standard PVC (THHN), XLPE is a thermoset material that does not melt or flow under high heat or short-circuit conditions.
  • Superior Moisture Resistance: It maintains a full 90°C rating even in wet underground conduits. This is a critical upgrade over older wire types that were forced to drop to a 75°C rating in damp conditions.
  • Modern 8000 Series Alloy: This alloy is highly conductive, flexible, and resists "cold flow," ensuring that connections stay tight at the terminal lugs over time.

According to NEC Table 310.16, the ampacity for 4/0 Aluminum depends on the temperature rating of your equipment terminations:

  • 60°C Terminations: 150 Amps
  • 75°C Terminations: 180 Amps
  • 90°C Terminations: 205 Amps

⚠️ PRO TIP: Most modern main breakers and panels are rated for 75°C. Therefore, in most commercial applications, this cable is treated as a 180 Amp feeder. However, for residential service entrance applications (120/240V, single-phase), NEC 310.12 allows this gauge to be used for 225A services (using the 83% rule), provided it carries the entire load of the dwelling.

This assembly follows the standard 120/240V or 120/208V color code:

  1. Black: Phase A (Hot)
  2. Red: Phase B (Hot)
  3. White: Neutral

The colors are either fully impregnated into the XLPE insulation or clearly striped for permanent, high-visibility identification that won't rub off during a long or difficult pull.

Yes we offer XHHW-2 Aluminum Wire in a single conductor from 14 AWG to 1000 MCM in multiple colors by the foot. Shop our single conductor XHHW-2 Collection here.
