Once a project exceeds the 200A-225A threshold, 4/0 AWG aluminum is no longer sufficient per the NEC. 250 MCM (or kcmil) is the next logical step, providing a significant increase in circular mil area to carry higher current. This size is the standard for 250-amp commercial feeders and is frequently used in high-end residential applications to mitigate voltage drop on extremely long service runs where 4/0 would result in power loss.
250 MCM conductors are thick and inherently resistant to bending. In a traditional "parallel" pull, these wires often fight each other, causing a "wedging" effect in conduit elbows that can stall a pull or damage the jacket. The Priority-Plex® factory twist binds the three conductors into a single, synchronized unit. This allows the bundle to flex more uniformly as it navigates bends, significantly reducing the physical strain on your wire puller and ensuring a smoother installation.
While many large-gauge wires are limited by their insulation's heat resistance, the XHHW-2 rating on these conductors allows for a full 90°C rating in both wet and dry locations. This is critical for 250 MCM feeders because it provides a higher "starting point" for ampacity adjustment (derating) if you are running multiple circuits in the same tray or conduit, or if you are installing in high-ambient-temperature environments like rooftops.
While the individual XHHW-2 conductors are highly moisture-resistant and suitable for wet locations, this specific Priority-Plex® twisted assembly is designed to be installed in conduit or cable trays. For direct burial applications (placed in a trench without pipe), you would typically require a "USE-2" rated cable or a jacketed assembly. Using this cable in conduit provides the best mechanical protection for 250 MCM feeders, especially in commercial parking lots or industrial sites.
