"The professional standard for 150-amp feeders and main service entrances—engineered with dual-rated THHN/THWN-2 insulation and a friction-reducing nylon jacket for maximum reliability in 600V applications."

Why Electricians Choose 1/0 AWG THHN/THWN-2 Copper

The 1/0 AWG copper building wire is a high-amperage conductor designed for demanding electrical environments. It is the primary choice for 150-amp residential services, commercial HVAC chillers, and industrial power distribution. The stranded construction is non-negotiable at this size, providing the flexibility required to navigate the large radius bends of 2-inch conduits and land securely in heavy-duty mechanical lugs.

  • Dual Rated (THHN/THWN-2): Engineered for dry locations up to 90°C (THHN) and wet locations (THWN-2), providing maximum versatility for indoor and outdoor conduits.

  • Tough PVC/Nylon Jacket: The high-heat and moisture-resistant PVC insulation is protected by a tough, friction-reducing Nylon outer sheath, making for easier pulls through tight bends.

  • High-Conductivity Copper: Manufactured with soft-annealed stranded copper to provide maximum flexibility and superior electrical conductivity for branch circuits and feeders.

  • Oil & Gasoline Resistant: The specialized jacket is designed to resist chemical degradation, making it ideal for industrial environments and service station wiring.

Common 1/0 THHN/THWN-2 Applications

  • 150-Amp Sub-Panels: The definitive choice for 150A feeders in large residential estates and commercial buildings.

  • Commercial Main Services: Used in parallel sets for high-amperage commercial service entrances.

  • Data Center Power: Providing high-conductivity feeders for server rack power distribution units (PDUs).

  • Industrial Weld Stations: Ideal for high-duty cycle industrial welding equipment.

  • Large EV Charging Hubs: Powering multi-car Level 2 charging banks or DC fast-charging stations.

1/0 THHN copper is rated for 170 Amps at 90°C. At the standard 75°C terminal rating used by most breakers, it is rated for 150 Amps. This makes it the industry-standard conductor for 150-amp feeders and services. We always recommend confirming wire size with a licensed electrician before purchasing.

For a standard 4-wire run, a 2-inch conduit is highly recommended. While it can technically fit in a 1.5-inch pipe, the 2-inch size provides the necessary clearance for a safe pull, especially when navigating 90-degree bends in heavy commercial or underground runs.

Note on Conduit Sizing: These recommendations are based on standard NEC 40% fill guidelines for general informational purposes. Always consult with a licensed electrician or project engineer to verify final conduit specifications and gauge size.

Yes. 1/0 Copper is the standard for 150-amp sub-panels. It provides the full 150-amp capacity at the 75°C rating, ensuring your installation is fully code-compliant and runs cool under heavy loads. There will be voltage drops when runs are longer than 100ft.

No. Like all THHN/THWN-2 products, 1/0 must be installed in conduit for all underground applications. For direct burial without conduit, you must use Type USE-2 or Aluminum URD.

Both are code-compliant choices for 150-amp applications, but the best choice depends on your project’s priorities:

  • Choose 1/0 Copper if you have limited space. It has a significantly smaller diameter, allowing for smaller conduit sizes and easier installation in crowded panels. Copper also offers superior conductivity and is preferred for high-vibration industrial environments.
  • Choose 3/0 Aluminum if cost-efficiency is your primary goal. Aluminum provides the same 150-amp capacity at a fraction of the price and is much lighter, though it requires larger conduit and anti-oxidant joint compound at termination points.

Yes. Per NEC 310.10(G), 1/0 AWG is the smallest size permitted to be run in parallel. This allows engineers to combine two or more conductors per phase to achieve much higher ampacities (e.g., 300A or 400A) while keeping the wire manageable for the installation team.
