The Belden 5500FH is a specialized 22 AWG cable designed for commercial sound and security systems. Because of its smaller gauge and shielding, it is the industry standard for low-current applications like door contacts, motion sensors, keypad wiring, and line-level audio signals. The "FH" designation indicates a specific construction style—often featuring a tinned copper (TC) shield or conductors for enhanced corrosion resistance.
No. The 5500FH carries a CMR (Riser) rating, which means it is designed for vertical installations in building shafts (risers) and general-purpose in-wall use. It is not approved for use in environmental air plenums. If your project requires the cable to be run in plenum-rated ceilings or HVAC ducts, you must use the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6500FH.
This cable features an overall Beldfoil® shield supplemented by tinned copper elements.
The 22 AWG (American Wire Gauge) size is the "go-to" for data-heavy or low-power security components. It is thinner and more flexible than 18 AWG, making it much easier to pull through tight spaces and terminate into small, dense terminal blocks found on control boards and keypads. While it has higher resistance than thicker gauges, it is perfectly adequate for signal-level transmissions and low-voltage sensors over moderate distances.
The cable is constructed with two stranded tinned copper conductors insulated with Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The assembly is wrapped in the overall Beldfoil shield and encased in a durable Gray PVC jacket. It has a very slim nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.126 inches. This small footprint allows for high-density wiring in crowded conduits and control panels.
