The Belden 5407FE is a multi-conductor shielded cable designed for high-density commercial sound, security, and control systems. With nine 20 AWG conductors, it is ideal for applications like complex access control panels (connecting multiple readers or sensors), multi-zone paging systems, and building automation controllers. The 20-gauge size is a "sweet spot" for many installers—offering more power-carrying capacity than 22 AWG while remaining easier to terminate in dense panels than 18 AWG.
No. The 5407FE carries a CMR (Riser) rating per UL1666. This rating means the cable is tested to resist the vertical spread of fire in building shafts (risers). It is approved for in-wall use and vertical runs between floors but is not permitted in environmental air plenums. If your project requires routing through a plenum-rated ceiling or duct, you must use the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6407FE.
This cable features an overall Beldfoil® shield (aluminum foil-polyester tape) providing 100% coverage. In a 9-conductor cable, shielding is vital to protect sensitive data signals from external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and to minimize internal crosstalk between the various signal paths. It also includes a tinned copper drain wire to ensure a consistent and easy-to-terminate ground connection for the shield.
The 9-conductor configuration allows for highly versatile wiring, enabling an installer to provide power, ground, and multiple signal/data returns for several devices in a single pull. The 20 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded bare copper conductors offer lower electrical resistance than standard 22 AWG wire, helping to mitigate voltage drop over moderate distances. This ensures that security hardware like keypads and card readers receive stable voltage for reliable operation.
The 5407FE is constructed with nine stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). The assembly is wrapped in the overall Beldfoil shield and encased in a durable PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.231 inches. Despite the high conductor count, the 7x28 stranding ensures the cable remains flexible enough for efficient pulls through conduit and around tight turns in building infrastructure.
