The Belden 5402FE is a multi-conductor shielded cable optimized for commercial security and professional audio environments. With four 20 AWG conductors, it is a "step up" in power capacity from standard 22 AWG wire, making it perfect for access control hardware, motorized camera controls, and high-fidelity intercom systems. It is commonly used where you need to run both power and data/signal to a single device.
No. The 5402FE is CMR (Riser) rated per UL1666. This indicates the cable is designed to resist the spread of fire vertically between floors and is suitable for general in-wall use. However, it lacks the low-smoke and low-flame properties required for environmental air plenums. If your installation requires routing through plenum ceilings or HVAC spaces, you must use the plenum-rated Belden 6402FE.
This cable features Belden’s patented Beldfoil® shield, an aluminum foil-polyester tape that provides 100% coverage. This is essential for protecting your signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) that can be generated by nearby fluorescent lighting or power lines. A 24 AWG tinned copper drain wire is included, allowing for a fast and reliable ground connection to drain off electrical noise.
The 20 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded bare copper conductors offer lower electrical resistance than 22 AWG. This results in less voltage drop, which is critical for ensuring that devices like magnetic door locks or electronic keypads receive the proper voltage at the end of a long run. The 20-gauge size also provides more physical tensile strength, reducing the risk of conductor breakage during difficult pulls through conduit.
The cable is built with four stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). These are wrapped in the overall Beldfoil shield and encased in a durable Gray PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.175 inches. This slim profile ensures the cable remains flexible and easy to "fish" through wall cavities or pull through crowded conduits.
