The Belden 5343FE is a high-performance multi-pair cable designed for sophisticated commercial sound, security, and data control systems. Unlike standard multi-conductor cables, this features four twisted pairs (8 conductors total). It is the ideal choice for high-end access control systems, RS-422/RS-485 data communication, and multi-zone audio where reducing signal crosstalk is a primary concern. The 18 AWG conductors provide excellent power delivery for peripheral devices over long cable runs.
No. The 5343FE is CMR (Riser) rated per UL1666. This rating means the cable is designed to prevent the spread of fire vertically between floors in a building's riser shafts. It is not approved for use in environmental air plenums (such as the space above a drop ceiling used for HVAC return air). For plenum installations, you should specify the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6343FE.
The 5343FE uses twisted-pair geometry, which is specifically designed to cancel out electromagnetic interference and reduce crosstalk between the pairs. Combined with the overall Beldfoil® shield (100% coverage), this cable provides superior signal protection. This dual-layer defense is critical for high-speed data signals or low-level audio that must pass through environments with high electrical noise from lighting or machinery.
While standard data cables (like Cat5e or Cat6) use 23 or 24 AWG, the 18 AWG conductors in the 5343FE have significantly more copper. This lower resistance allows for much higher current capacity and less voltage drop. This is vital for "long-haul" security runs where the cable must provide both high-speed data and enough power to operate door locks, heaters for outdoor cameras, or high-output paging speakers.
The cable is constructed with eight stranded bare copper conductors organized into four color-coded pairs. The pairs are insulated with Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), wrapped in the overall Beldfoil shield, and encased in a durable PVC jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.354 inches. Despite its higher conductor count, the stranded design ensures it remains flexible enough for pulling through commercial conduit systems.
