The Belden 5320FE is a specialized shielded cable designed for commercial sound, security, and low-voltage control circuits. Unlike the more common stranded versions, this cable features solid conductors, making it an excellent choice for permanent installations where the cable will be terminated into IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) blocks or screw terminals. It is frequently used for security sensors, intercom systems, and power-limited control circuits.
No. The 5320FE carries a CMR (Riser) rating, which means it is designed for vertical installations in building shafts (risers) and general-purpose in-wall use. It is not approved for use in environmental air plenums. If your installation requires the cable to run through plenum-rated ceilings or HVAC ducts, you must use the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6320FE.
This cable is equipped with Belden’s proprietary Beldfoil® shield (aluminum foil-polyester tape), providing 100% coverage. This shielding is essential for blocking electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) that can cause signal noise or data errors. Because it uses a solid conductor, the shield maintains a very consistent profile. A 24 AWG tinned copper drain wire is included to facilitate a reliable and easy ground termination.
The use of solid 18 AWG bare copper conductors provides several advantages in specific environments. Solid wire has slightly lower DC resistance than stranded wire of the same gauge, which helps minimize voltage drop over very long runs. Additionally, solid conductors are much easier to punch down into terminal blocks and provide a more stable connection in permanent installations where the cable will not be subjected to frequent bending or vibration.
The 5320FE is constructed with two solid bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). The assembly is wrapped in the overall Beldfoil shield and encased in a durable Gray PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.162 inches. The solid core makes the cable slightly stiffer than its stranded counterparts, which can actually assist in "fishing" the wire through wall cavities and short conduit runs.
