The Belden 5304FE is a multi-conductor shielded cable designed for commercial sound, security, and control systems. With six 18 AWG conductors, it is an excellent choice for applications that require multiple data or power paths, such as access control systems, multi-zone paging, and sophisticated building automation. The 18-gauge size is robust enough to provide power to card readers, sensors, and low-voltage actuators while maintaining signal integrity.
No. The 5304FE is CMR (Riser) rated, which means it is designed for vertical installations in building shafts (risers) and general-purpose in-wall use. It has been tested to prevent the spread of fire between floors, but it does not meet the strict low-smoke and low-flame requirements for environmental air plenums. For installations in plenum ceilings or ducts, you must use the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6304FE.
This cable features Belden’s patented Beldfoil® shield, an aluminum foil-polyester tape that provides 100% coverage. In a 6-conductor configuration, this shielding is critical for preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI) from distorting audio signals or causing data errors in control circuits. The cable also includes a tinned copper drain wire to simplify the grounding of the shield, ensuring a clean electrical environment for sensitive electronics.
The 18 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded bare copper conductors offer significantly lower electrical resistance compared to standard 22 AWG wire. This reduces voltage drop, which is vital for ensuring that devices at the end of a long cable run receive the correct amount of power. The six-conductor layout allows for versatile wiring, such as providing power, ground, and multiple signal returns for a single zone or device in one pull.
The cable is constructed with six stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). These conductors are protected by the overall Beldfoil shield and encased in a PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.214 inches. This profile is thin enough to remain flexible for pulls through conduit while being durable enough for professional commercial installations.
