The Belden 5302FE is one of the most popular multi-conductor cables for commercial security and professional audio. With four 18 AWG conductors, it is the standard choice for access control systems (connecting card readers and door contacts), pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera telemetry, and high-performance speaker runs. The 18-gauge wire provides a robust path for both signal and low-voltage power over significant distances.
No. The 5302FE carries a CMR (Riser) rating, which means it is designed for vertical runs between floors and general in-wall applications. It has been fire-tested to ensure it does not easily carry a flame between floors, but it does not meet the strict low-smoke and low-flame requirements for environmental air plenums. For plenum installations, the Belden 6302FE is the correct alternative.
This cable uses Belden’s patented Beldfoil® shield, which consists of an aluminum foil-polyester tape providing 100% coverage. In a 4-conductor setup, shielding is vital to protect sensitive data signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by nearby lighting or power cables. The included tinned copper drain wire allows for easy and reliable grounding of the shield to eliminate unwanted noise or signal interference.
The 18 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded bare copper conductors offer significantly lower electrical resistance than standard 22 AWG security wire. This reduction in resistance prevents voltage drop, ensuring that electronic locks, motion sensors, or speakers receive the necessary power at the end of a long run. Having four conductors in one jacket allows for two separate circuits or a combination of power and data to be pulled simultaneously, saving labor costs.
The cable is constructed with four stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). These are protected by the overall foil shield and encased in a durable PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.188 inches. This slim, flexible profile is designed for easy pulling through conduit and maneuvering within crowded electrical boxes or wall cavities.
