The Belden 5300FE is one of the most widely used shielded cables for commercial security and professional audio systems. Its 18 AWG conductors make it the "standard" choice for general-purpose applications such as smoke detector circuits, intercom and PA systems, and security control signals. It provides a reliable balance of flexibility and power-carrying capacity for low-voltage devices.
No. The 5300FE is CMR (Riser) rated, which means it is designed for vertical installations between floors and general in-wall use. It is not rated for use in environmental air plenums. If your project requires the cable to be run in a plenum-rated ceiling or air-handling space, you must use the plenum-rated equivalent, Belden 6300FE.
This cable features Belden’s patented Beldfoil® shield, an aluminum foil-polyester tape that provides 100% coverage around the two conductors. This shielding is essential for blocking electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), ensuring that audio remains clear and data signals remain stable. It also includes a tinned copper drain wire to facilitate a quick and reliable ground termination.
The 18 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded bare copper conductors offer significantly lower electrical resistance compared to 22 AWG "station wire." This reduction in resistance is vital for preventing voltage drop over longer cable runs, ensuring that security sensors or speakers at the end of a run receive the necessary power. The 18-gauge size also provides more physical strength, making it more resilient during the pulling process through wall studs or conduit.
The 5300FE is constructed with two stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene (PP). These are protected by the overall foil shield and encased in a durable Gray PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.162 inches. This slim profile, combined with the flexibility of the 7x26 stranding, allows for easy installation in tight spaces and around sharp bends in building infrastructure.
