The Belden 5201FE is a robust 16 AWG cable designed for professional sound and security installations. The 3-conductor configuration is particularly useful for balanced line audio, intercom systems, and security sensors that require a power, ground, and signal wire. Its 16-gauge thickness makes it a preferred choice for mid-to-long distance runs where signal degradation and voltage drop must be kept to a minimum.
No. The 5201FE carries a CMR (Riser) rating, which signifies it is tested for vertical installations in building shafts (risers) and general-purpose in-wall use. It is not approved for use in environmental air plenums. If your installation requires the cable to run through plenum-rated ceilings or ducts, you will need to specify the Belden 6201FE.
This cable features Belden’s proprietary Beldfoil® shield, an aluminum foil-polyester tape that provides 100% coverage around the three conductors. This shielding is essential for blocking electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) which can cause "hum" in audio systems or false triggers in security hardware. A 24 AWG tinned copper drain wire is included to facilitate a quick and effective ground termination.
While 22 AWG is common for basic sensors, 16 AWG provides significantly more copper mass, resulting in much lower electrical resistance. This is crucial for powering high-current devices like magnetic locks (Maglocks), motorized PTZ cameras, or high-fidelity paging speakers. Using 16 AWG ensures that the device at the end of a long run receives the necessary voltage to operate reliably.
The cable is built with three stranded bare copper conductors insulated with polypropylene. The assembly is wrapped in the Beldfoil shield and protected by a Gray PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket. It has a nominal outside diameter of approximately 0.190 inches. This thin profile, combined with the flexible stranded conductors, allows for easier pulls through conduit and tight wall cavities compared to solid-conductor alternatives.
