"High-capacity transmission feeder for utility-scale grids—engineered with tree-retardant XLPE and dual-layer water blocking for maximum 35kV reliability in ultra-high-load underground circuits."

Why Utilities Specify the 750 MCM 35kV URD

The 750 MCM 35kV URD cable is a premier primary conductor designed for the highest-capacity underground distribution systems. It is the preferred choice for utility engineers managing urban grid expansions or providing primary power to massive industrial complexes where 500 MCM does not provide sufficient ampacity.

  • Dual-Layer Water Block Protection: On a conductor this large, moisture ingress can be catastrophic. This cable utilizes specialized water-blocking compounds in the conductor strands and water-swellable agents in the neutral layer to create a permanent longitudinal moisture seal.

  • Tree-Retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE): Featuring a 345-mil insulation wall, the TR-XLPE is chemically formulated to inhibit the formation of "water trees," ensuring the cable remains electrically stable even under the heat and stress of maximum current loads in damp soil.

  • 1/3 Concentric Neutral: Featuring 24 x #12 AWG annealed bare copper wires, this configuration provides a robust grounding path and superior electrical stress control for high-load utility systems.

  • Stranded 1350-H19 Aluminum: The 750 kcmil core provides maximum tensile strength while keeping the outer diameter as slim as possible for installation in heavy-duty duct banks.

Common 35kV Applications

  • Substation Exit Feeders: Carrying massive primary loads from utility substations to regional distribution hubs.

  • Major Industrial Infrastructure: Providing reliable 35kV primary service to refineries, steel mills, and massive data center campuses.

  • Urban Grid Expansion: The "backbone" cable for upgrading city electrical grids to handle increased population density and power demands.

For a single conductor installed in an underground environment (90°C conductor, 20°C ambient earth, 90 RHO):

  • Direct Buried: Approximately 560 Amps.
  • In Underground Duct: Approximately 450 Amps.

The "Maximum" Number: 565 Amps. This is for direct burial (no duct).

Pro Tip: If you are "triplexing" these cables (twisting three together), remember that heat dissipation is slightly reduced, and you should verify de-rating factors based on your specific duct bank configuration.

The Customer Warning: “Actual ampacity must be calculated based on your specific soil RHO, duct bank configuration, and load factor per NEC Article 311.”

While it varies by manufacturer (e.g., Southwire, Prysmian, or Okonite), a 750 MCM 35kV cable with 100% insulation typically has an OD of approximately 1.75 to 1.85 inches.

  • Single Cable: Fits comfortably in a 3-inch conduit.
  • Three Cables (Triplex): Usually requires a 5-inch or 6-inch conduit to maintain the allowable 40% fill ratio.

The 100% insulation level is the utility standard for grounded systems.

  • Construction: It uses approximately 345 mils of TR-XLPE or EPR insulation.
  • Clearance: It is slightly thinner and more flexible than the 133% level (420 mils). However, it must only be used on systems where a ground fault is cleared by protective relaying within 1 minute. Using it on ungrounded systems risks a total cable blowout during a fault.

Aluminum is prone to corrosion if moisture is trapped within the strands.

  • The Mechanism: The "Water Block" feature utilizes swellable powders or yarns within the conductor strands and under the jacket.
  • The Result: It stops the longitudinal migration of water. Without this, a single nick in the jacket 50 feet away could eventually lead to water vaporizing at the termination point or causing "water treeing" in the insulation, which shortens the cable life significantly.

Adhering to the bending radius is critical to prevent damaging the semiconductive layers and the concentric neutrals.

  • During Pulling (under tension): 24 × OD (Approx. 43 inches).
  • Final Training (installed): 12 × OD (Approx. 21.5 inches).

Note: Because 750 MCM is more flexible than 1000 MCM, installers are often tempted to "over-bend" it in tight switchgear. Use a mandrel or template to ensure these limits aren't exceeded.
