"Industrial-scale primary power distribution—engineered with tree-retardant XLPE and dual-layer water blocking for maximum grid stability in ultra-high-load 35kV underground circuits."

Why Utilities Specify the 600 MCM 35kV URD

The 600 MCM 35kV URD cable is a specialized primary conductor engineered for applications where maximum ampacity is the priority. This gauge is a common choice for heavy industrial feeders and high-capacity utility interconnects that require more current density than the standard 500 MCM series can provide.

  • Dual-Layer Water Block Protection: Moisture protection is critical for high-load conductors. This cable features a water-blocking compound within the conductor strands and water-swellable agents in the neutral layer, providing a complete longitudinal moisture seal to prevent "water treeing" over decades of service.

  • Tree-Retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE): The 345-mil insulation wall is comprised of premium TR-XLPE. This material is chemically engineered to resist the electrochemical stressors that cause microscopic cracks in standard insulation, ensuring the cable survives in saturated or chemically active soil.

  • 1/3 Concentric Neutral: Featuring 19 x #12 AWG (or equivalent conductivity) annealed bare copper wires, the 1/3 neutral configuration provides a high-capacity ground-fault path and excellent electrical stress control for ultra-high-load systems.

  • Compact Stranded 1350-H19 Aluminum: The 600 kcmil aluminum core is compact-stranded to reduce the overall diameter and air gaps, allowing this high-capacity cable to be pulled through standard 5" or 6" primary duct banks.

Common 35kV Applications

  • Major Industrial Interconnects: Providing 35kV primary service to large-scale refineries, steel mills, and heavy manufacturing campuses.

  • High-Capacity Utility Hubs: Connecting primary substations to major localized distribution nodes in high-demand urban areas.

  • Renewable Energy Infrastructure: Serving as a primary collector cable for the highest-capacity wind farms and solar arrays.

The power capacity varies based on how the cable is buried and the soil's ability to dissipate heat. For a 90°C conductor and 20°C earth temperature:

  • Direct Buried: Approximately 490 Amps.
  • In Underground Duct: Approximately 395 Amps.
  • Note: If you are installing these in a bank with other powered cables, you must apply de-rating factors as the cables will heat each other up.

Knowing the diameter is essential for choosing the right pipe size and termination kits.

  • Approximate OD: 1.65 to 1.75 inches.
  • Single Cable: A 3-inch conduit is standard.
  • Triplex (3 cables): A 4-inch or 5-inch conduit is recommended. While a 4-inch conduit meets the 40% fill rule, a 5-inch conduit is often preferred for long pulls or runs with multiple bends to reduce friction.

The "1/3 Neutral" means the total cross-sectional area of the copper concentric wires wrapped around the cable is one-third the size of the 600 MCM aluminum conductor.

  • This is the standard configuration for three-phase utility systems where the load is balanced. It provides a reliable path for fault currents while keeping the cable's weight and cost lower than a full-neutral design.

Since URD cables are buried, moisture is a constant threat.

  • The Technology: This cable uses swellable agents (powders or tapes) inside the conductor strands.
  • The Benefit: If the jacket is damaged, the water block material expands to stop water from traveling (wicking) down the conductor. This prevents "water trees" from forming in the insulation, which is a leading cause of premature 35kV cable failure.

To avoid "stress points" in the 35kV insulation, you must respect the following limits:

  • During Installation (Pulling): 40 inches. (24 times the Outside Diameter).
  • Final Training (Fixed): 20 inches. (12 times the Outside Diameter).
  • Warning: Bending the cable more sharply than 20 inches can shift the concentric neutrals or damage the semi-con shield, leading to a catastrophic blowout once energized.
