12 AWG THHN copper wire is rated for 30 Amps at 90°C. However, under the NEC (National Electrical Code) "Small Conductor" rules, the overcurrent protection (breaker size) for #12 copper is limited to 20 Amps. This makes it the required gauge for kitchen small appliance circuits, bathroom receptacles, and laundry circuits.
A 1/2-inch conduit can safely hold up to nine 12 AWG THHN conductors. This allows for a high density of circuits in a single run, which is ideal for commercial lighting "homeruns." For larger wire bundles or runs with several 90-degree bends, upgrading to a 3/4-inch conduit will reduce friction and help manage heat dissipation.
Note on Conduit Sizing: These recommendations are based on standard NEC 40% fill guidelines for general informational purposes. Always consult with a licensed electrician or project engineer to verify final conduit specifications and gauge size.
Yes, provided it is installed in a conduit. Because our 12 AWG is dual-rated as THWN-2, it is specifically engineered for wet locations and can handle the moisture and condensation found in outdoor conduit runs. It is the ideal choice for powering outdoor GFCI outlets, security lighting, and post lights that require a 20-amp circuit.
No, 12 AWG THHN is not rated for direct burial. While the THWN-2 rating means the wire is moisture-resistant and safe to pull through underground conduit, the nylon jacket is not engineered for direct contact with soil. For burial without a protective conduit, you must use a specialized cable such as Type UF-B (Underground Feeder) or Type USE-2.
Stranded 12 AWG is significantly easier to pull through conduit and navigate through bends. While solid wire is often used in "stab-in" residential outlets, professionals prefer stranded #12 for conduit work because it is much more flexible and places less stress on the wire during installation.
