"The strong solution for high-density metropolitan power—engineered with tree-retardant XLPE and dual-layer water blocking for maximum 35kV reliability in critical infrastructure feeders."

Why Utilities Specify the 1000 MCM 35kV URD

The 1000 MCM 35kV URD cable is a premier primary conductor designed for the highest-capacity underground distribution systems. It is the preferred choice for engineers managing massive power requirements for data centers, hospital campuses, and major municipal infrastructure where power failure is not an option.

  • Dual-Layer Water Block Protection: On a conductor of this magnitude, moisture ingress is the greatest threat to system longevity. This cable utilizes specialized water-blocking compounds in the conductor strands and water-swellable agents in the neutral layer to create a permanent longitudinal moisture seal.

  • Tree-Retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE): Featuring a 345-mil insulation wall, the TR-XLPE is chemically formulated to inhibit the formation of "water trees," ensuring the cable remains electrically stable even under the extreme thermal stress of a 1,000 kcmil load.

  • 1/3 Concentric Neutral: Featuring 20 x #10 AWG annealed bare copper wires, this configuration provides a massive grounded path for fault currents and superior electrical stress control for the highest-load utility systems.

  • Stranded 1350-H19 Aluminum: The 1000 kcmil core provides maximum tensile strength while maintaining a profile that can typically be pulled through 5" or 6" primary duct banks.

Common 35kV Applications

  • Data Center Primary Feeder: Providing the massive, reliable power required to sustain hyperscale cloud and enterprise data facilities.

  • Critical Hospital Infrastructure: Ensuring stable 35kV primary service for large-scale medical campuses and trauma centers.

  • Municipal Grid Arteries: Serving as the main underground "power highway" connecting major city substations to high-demand downtown districts.

In a standard underground installation (90°C conductor temp, 20°C ambient earth), the ampacity typically falls around:

  • Direct Buried: ~660 Amps
  • In Underground Duct: ~530 Amps

Note: These values assume a standard "RHO" (soil thermal resistivity) of 90. If your soil is particularly dry or sandy, you may need to de-rate the cable to prevent overheating.

A 1/3 neutral means the copper concentric wires have 1/3 the conductivity of the 1000 MCM aluminum phase conductor.

  • Balanced Loads: In utility distribution, three-phase loads are usually well-balanced, meaning the neutral doesn't need to carry the full current of the phase wire.
  • Fault Current: The 1/3 copper neutral is sized primarily to handle short-duration fault currents until the circuit breaker or fuse trips.

Large stranded aluminum conductors have "valleys" between the wire strands. If water enters the cable:

  • Capillary Action: Water can travel hundreds of feet inside the cable via these valleys.
  • The Solution: This cable uses Longitudinal Water Block (usually a swellable powder or tape) that expands instantly upon contact with water, creating a physical dam. This is the single most important feature for ensuring the cable lasts its intended 30-40 year lifespan.

While it varies slightly by manufacturer, a 1000 MCM 35kV (100% insulation) cable typically has an Outside Diameter of approximately 1.95 to 2.10 inches.

  • Conduit Choice: For a single cable, a 4-inch conduit is common. For a "triplex" (three cables twisted together), you will typically need a 6-inch conduit to meet the 40% fill ratio required by the NEC.

Technically no, if the system is designed for 133%.

  • 100% Insulation (345 mils): Designed for systems that trip ground faults in under 1 minute.
  • 133% Insulation (420 mils): Used on ungrounded or impedance-grounded systems where a fault might persist for up to an hour.
If you install a 100% insulation cable on a 133% system, you are under-insulating the line, which could lead to premature failure during a phase-to-ground fault.
