#10 AWG Copper XHHW-2 Building Wire is a high-performance electrical wire primarily used for power distribution in various building applications. It features a soft drawn bare copper conductor with cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation, offering excellent resistance to heat, moisture, and abrasion. This wire is suitable for both wet and dry locations and is dual-rated for 600V or 1000V applications.
XHHW-2 is an acronym that describes the wire's key characteristics: 'X' for Cross-linked polyethylene insulation, 'HH' for High Heat-resistant, 'W' for Water-resistant, and '-2' indicating its suitability for 90°C operation in both wet and dry conditions. This designation highlights its enhanced durability and versatility in challenging environments.
This wire is primarily used for power distribution in conduit or other recognized raceways for services, feeders, and branch circuit wiring, as specified in the National Electrical Code (NEC). Common applications include residential and commercial building wiring, machine tool wiring, appliance circuits, and control circuits. It is also suitable for HVAC systems and motor leads for small to medium-sized motors.
The main difference lies in their temperature ratings in wet environments. Standard XHHW wire is rated for 90°C in dry locations but only 75°C in wet locations. XHHW-2, however, is an upgraded version that maintains a consistent 90°C rating in both dry and wet conditions, offering greater versatility and enhanced safety.
At 90°C, #10 AWG Copper XHHW-2 wire has an allowable ampacity of 40 Amps. However, according to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the overcurrent protection for #10 AWG copper wire shall not exceed 30 amps. It is crucial to always adhere to NEC guidelines for safe installation and operation.
